Installing a PTO shaft on a combined seed drill is trickier than on a mower because of the complex hitch geometry. Here is the trick:

The “Parallel” Rule

  1. Check the Geometry: If you are NOT using a CV joint, the input shaft of the implement and the PTO stub of the tractor must be parallel to each other during operation to cancel out vibrations. If they aren’t, you need a CV shaft.
  2. Cutting to Length: Hook the machine up. Raise the linkage fully and turn the tractor to the tightest possible turning circle. Ensure the shaft doesn’t close completely (bottom out). Leave at least 25mm space.
  3. Clutch Setting: If your drill uses a slip clutch, “burnish” it before the season starts. Loosen the springs, slip it for 2 seconds to remove rust, then tighten to spec. A seized clutch breaks gearboxes.

How do I stop the PTO shaft from rattling on my pneumatic drill?
Rattling usually means the joints are worn or out of phase. On pneumatic drills, it can also mean the telescopic tubes have too much play. We recommend switching to a shaft with a ‘star’ or ‘spline’ profile tube, which has tighter tolerances and less vibration than the standard lemon tube.
